Calef’s Country Store in Barrington will honor long-time employee Joel Sherburne on September 9, 2017, from noon to 3:00 pm. All are welcome, rain or shine, to this free celebration of a milestone — Joel’s sixty years of working at Calef’s. He started stocking shelves when he was just seventeen. (Don’t worry; he’s not retiring yet!). This event also launches a new book, Sixty Years of Cuttin’ the Cheese: Joel Sherburne and Calef’s Famous Country Store, by local author and humorist Rebecca Rule. Veteran radio broadcaster and author Mike Morin will host a full afternoon featuring a mac and cheese lunch with biscuits, coleslaw, cake and ice cream. Calef favorites Carolyn and Friends will provide music. Activities will include a cheese tasting, raffles, and games. Joel and Rebecca will sign copies and tell stories from the book. Besides presenting the history of Calef’s, founded in 1869, Sixty Years of Cuttin’ the Cheese features recipes, vintage photographs, and some of Joel’s famous sayings or “Joelisms.” Rule says, “This is the story of Calef’s through Joel’s eyes. But it’s also the story of country stores all over New England and across the country. It’s the story of the simpler way of life that the country store represents.” For more information contact Jean Kerr, Flavor Media at jean@jeankerr.com or 207-752-7012
