An Evening with Ben Shattuck: Writing, Place, and the Power of Storytelling
Join us for an intimate conversation with Ben Shattuck, award-winning author of Six Walks: In the Footsteps of Henry David Thoreau and The History of Sound. A keen observer of New England’s landscapes and history, Shattuck’s work explores the intersection of place, memory, and storytelling.
In this special event, Shattuck will discuss his writing process, the role of New England’s environment and people in shaping a narrative, and the enduring influence of Thoreau. He’ll also share insights on Nantucket, nature writing, and the craft of historical fiction.
Books will be available for purchase and signing in collaboration with Water Street Books in Exeter, NH.

Ben Shattuck is a recipient of the PEN America Short Story Prize and a 2019 Pushcart Prize. His debut book, Six Walks: In the Footsteps of Henry David Thoreau, was recognized as a New Yorker Best Book of 2022 and a finalist for the Massachusetts Book Award. His second book, The History of Sound, was named one of the Chicago Tribune’s 10 Best Books of 2024 and longlisted for the 2025 Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction.?
A film based on his story, The History of Sound, starring Adam Mescal and Josh O’Connor, will premiere in 2025.
